Bardmoor YMCA January Newsletter
Message from Haiti YMCA CEO Gwen Apollon
Dear friends,
Thank you all very much for your prayers and wishes during this difficult time. I received them all in my blackberry, but unfortunately could not answer back, due to unavailable communication lines. Click here to read this message.
What has happened here in Haiti is a true tragedy!
Indeed, since Tuesday, January 12th, Haitians are living a nightmare. They are lying in the streets because most have suddenly lost everything. The sight of this is hard beyond measure. Many lives are lost and most of the existing infrastructures are gone or need to be destroyed because they are too damaged and have become a danger to the public.
The nation was not prepared for this, and the Government is ill equipped to effectively respond.
The Situation with the YMCA Youth Centers
As for the YMCA, we are thus far missing two persons whom we suspect have perished in the disaster: Frantzi Germain (also known as “Schumacher” to some, because of his tendency to drive fast); and, Roges Lamothe’s mother, who had gone to Church moments before the catastrophe, and is feared lost under the rubble of the church, which was completely destroyed.
Besides these two sad cases, I had occasion to speak with most of the staff and volunteers and thus far two staff members, Tania and Agenor, were slightly injured, while assisting the After-school youth out of the Port-au-Prince Center at the time of the disaster.
As it concerns the Youth Centers, the Port-au-Prince Center is completely wrecked. The Camp-Perrin Center and the Kenscoff Center were spared and the latter is being used as a temporary lodging facility for the homeless of the community.

Strong Kids Class
Our Strong Kids class is a partnership with All Children’s Hospital. Originally it was designed to help young people suffering from Cancer, but we now want to expand it to include youngsters suffering from other chronic diseases.
Lisa Smith is our Strong Kids instructor from All Children’s, and she has a lot of experience working with children who have special needs. This is a great opportunity for us to make a difference in the lives of children who really need help. The youngsters we hope to target include those with ailments such as Diabetes, Crohn’s disease, Asthma and any form of Cancer: and we would like to talk with any parents who think exercise might help a child who is suffering from a serious illness. Please help us by spreading the word to those who might need help. The class meets Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 for 6 weeks, and costs $20 per child.
New Group Exercise classes for 2010

Summer "Free Begin to Swim" Program
We are pleased to announce the introduction of a Free Begin to Swim program for the summer, to go alongside our regular summer swim lessons. The Free Begin to Swim effort will be aimed at scholarship participants in our school age summer camp programs.
The Bardmoor YMCA plays host to our school age summer campers each year at the Bardmoor Country Club pool. The camps draw children from a variety of areas around southern Pinellas County. The children swim twice a week, but often those who have little confidence, or cannot swim at all have to sit out or stay in the shallow end with floaties on. We have swim lessons available for those who can afford it, but want to start lessons for children who are on scholarships through the YMCA, or receive financial assistance from the county or state. It has always been a mission of the YMCA to ensure every child can swim, and that is so much more important in a state such as Florida, and a county like Pinellas. For more details, or to help sponsor a child, contact Mike Roberts at the Bardmoor YMCA, 394 9622, or by e-mail mjroberts@suncoastymca.org
Youth Fishing and Hockey
Michael Gentes, a former teen leader who is now one of our best children’s programmers, is going to start a new series of classes this winter and spring.
Michael is particularly excited, as an avid Lightning fan, to be leading a street hockey class on Saturday mornings. He is also thrilled to be helping children learn how to fish in the pond behind our Y, a pond that is teeming with Carp – great practice fish before you move on to the one’s you can eat! For more details on these classes call the branch or e-mail mjroberts@suncoastymca.org
