Northwestern Mutual Foundation Community Service Award
Vic Wickman YMCA Volunteer, is a recipient of a Northwestern Mutual Foundation Community Service Award for the work he has done at the YMCA. The Northwestern Mutual Foundation Community Service Award program was created to recognize Financial Representatives for their outstanding volunteer leadership and dedication to charitable organizations. Northwestern Mutual Foundation presented the YMCA with a $10,000 check on behalf of the work Vic has done at the YMCA. The YMCA of the Suncoast – Greater Ridgecrest Branch is located in unincorporated Largo – serving a predominantly lower income, African-American community. As with many African American communities, many of the youth and families did not know how to swim, and had fears of the water that were passed down for generations. Despite having a large, new family pool at the YMCA, few in the community knew how to swim. In May 2008, a volunteer at the YMCA mentioned this concern to his friend Carl “Vic” Wickman, a former water safety instructor, swimming teacher, swim coach and longtime swim advocate; the conversation ended with Vic agreeing to come out to volunteer some of his time in the pool to teach the kids to swim. What started with Vic coming out once or twice a week in the evening to work with some teens during the school year, has quickly become a passion: He volunteers 5 days a week, about 10 hours a day during summer, and 2 days a week, about 5 hours a week during the school year, to teach infants, youth and older adults in the community how to swim all free of charge.
